Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus is a Masterpiece

June 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Two essential albums from tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins. 1956’s Saxophone Colossus is thought to be Rollins’ masterpiece and features Tommy Flanagan and Max Roach. Work Time (1955) also features Roach and Ray Bryant.Sonny Rollins recorded extensively in and recorded many hours of fantastic music ,Saxophone Colossus may seem a bit of a self-regarding title but it’s more than justified by the invention, bravado and sheer self-confidence of his playing. Of course it helps that he’s backed by one of the greatest rhythm sections ever assembled. Tommy Flanagan doesn’t waste a note and Max Roach gives the finest exhibition of jazz drumming ever recorded. There’s not a single weak moment, let alone a weak track, on this recording Sonny Rollins, Worktime, a very underrated album. few great records in jazz have ever sounded so effortless and uncontrived. That is the triumph of this album. Play it again and again, you’ll never get enough.
